The Evening Love Made You Descend into the Hall

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection Sonnets for HélèneThemes LovePeriod 16th century

The evening Love made you descend into the hall
To dance with artful grace a lovely ballet of love,
Your eyes, though it was night, brought back the day,
So well they knew to scatter lightning through the place.

The ballet was divine, which was wont to resume,
To break apart, remake itself, and turn upon return
To mingle, part, and turn all round about,
Counter-imitating the course of the river Meander.

Now it was round, now long, now narrow,
Now in a point, in a triangle in the way one sees
The squadron of the crane avoiding the cold.

I am wrong, you did not dance, but your foot fluttered
On the top of the earth; so too your body had
Transformed itself for this evening into divine nature.
