Mignonne, allons voir si la rose

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection OdesThemes TimePeriod 16th century

To Cassandre

Mignonne, let us go see if the rose
Which this morning had disclosed
Her robe of purple to the Sun,
Has this evening lost
The folds of her purple robe,
And her complexion like your own.

Alas! see how in little space,
Mignonne, upon the ground,
Alas! alas! she has let her beauties fall!
O truly cruel Nature,
Since such a flower endures
Only from morning until evening!

So, if you believe me, Mignonne,
While your age is in bloom
In its greenest newness,
Gather, gather your youth:
As with this flower, old age
Will tarnish your beauty.
