Marie, you never fail to take me to task

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection Second Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

Marie, you never fail to take me to task
Saying I am too fickle, and you always tell me,
When I would kiss you, that I should go to my Cassandra,
And you always call me inconstant in love.

I am willing to be so too; men are truly dull
Who dare not undertake a new love in a hundred places.
He who wishes to listen to only one woman
Is not worthy that Love should play him good turns.

He who dares not form a new affection
Lacks courage, or lacks brains,
Distrusting himself, who can have no better.

Sickly men, or those beaten down by old age,
Must be constant: but foolish is the youth
Who is not awakened, and who does not love in a hundred places.
