The Dog and the Cat

Fable by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian Period 18th century

A dog sold by his master
broke his chain, and returned
to the home that saw him born.
Judge what became of him
when, as the reward for his zeal,
he was from that house
driven back with a stick
toward his new dwelling.
An old cat, his companion,
seeing his extreme surprise,
said this word to him as he passed:
so you thought, poor fool,
that it’s for us that we are loved!
