Psalm V

Poem by Jean-Antoine De Baïf Period 16th century

Lend your ear to my lament, Lord God:
Be pleased to hear the murmur of my thought.
Hear my cry, as my King, as my God. So I shall pray to you.

In the morning then my voice, Sire, you shall hear:
In the morning then I shall prepare my prayer
All toward you, from where, looking for my deliverance, I would wait:

If you are God whom wrongdoing shall never please:
If evil-doing does not dwell with you:
If before your eyes the reckless shall never come:

For in horror you have held them, abhorring them,
All the workers of vain error: and you will destroy
The promoters of the lie who, liars, babble in vain.

The Lord detests and hates the accursed man,
Who seeks blood, and makes a trade of treachery.
I trust, as one assured, in the greatness of your goodness:

Assured by it, I shall go enter your house:
In that holy place, adoring you, God, reverently,
And wholly filled with your fear, I shall render you the honors due.

By your uprightness, Lord God, guide my steps,
That I be not put at the mercy of my enemy:
And before me always set straight the holy path of your goodness.

No justice shall flow from their mouth:
Their inward parts, disloyalties: and their throat,
An opening of a tomb: and with their tongue they are flatterers.

Desolate let them be, laid waste let them be: and Lord God
Every enterprise they have undertaken, undo it.
Cast them down among the great number of their frauds and crimes.

Cast them down, they who have set themselves against your greatness:
And may all those who, devout, hope in you,
Be made glad. They will feast forever when you shelter them.

Those who love your greatness shall take delight in you:
To the whole man your favor, Sire, you will give:
And the shield of your goodness, covering him wholly, shall defend him.
