Pale Head of My Chimera

Poem by Jules Barbey d'Aurevilly Collection PoussièresPeriod 19th century

Pale head of my Chimera,
Whose pallor I adored without understanding it,
You now join to that first mystery
The mystery of your redness!
The sudden vermilion that comes over your face,
When, that beloved face, you turn it toward me,
Is too burning, too dark, and rolls too much storm,
To be from your blood, my cold-hearted Chimera.
As well, seeing it, I tell myself and I believe
That it is my own blood that passes and rises in you!

1886.
