Little Ode to a Young Mistress

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection OdesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

Why, like a young Filly,
Do you squint at me askance?
Why, wild one, do you flee beyond,
When I want to come near you?

You do not want to be touched,
But if I had you under my hand,
Rest assured that in your mouth
I would soon have put the bit.

Then, wheeling you at full bridle,
Suddenly I would make you run,
And spurring you, would be your guide
In the career of Loves.

But through the grass you now do nothing
But follow the coolness of the meadows,
Because you have not yet
Found some good rider.
