In This Rough Winter…

Poem by Emile Verhaeren Period 19th century

In this rough winter when the floating sun
Is stranded on the horizon like a heavy wreck,
I love to say your name with its slow and grave timbre
When the clock resounds with the deep strokes of time.

And the more I say it again, the more my voice is delighted
So much that from my lip, it descends into my heart,
And that it awakens in me a more ardent happiness
Than the sweetest words I have said in my life.

And before the new dawn or the evening falling asleep
I repeat it with my voice always the same
But, tell me, with what strong and supreme ardor
I will pronounce it at the hour of death!
