By Love, by Love I Was, I Was Wounded

Poem by Jean-Antoine De Baïf Collection Loves of MélinePeriod 16th century

By Love, by Love I was, I was wounded,
And from my blood the liquor drop by drop
In hot tears from my wound flows down,
Which from flowing since then has not ceased.

I am by Love so thoroughly possessed
That little by little all my strength flees,
And whatever ointment I apply to my wound
Without stanching it, my ill has not left me.

In such a state my wound declines,
That Machaon with no juice of any root
Could not deaden its poison.

But to be healed, let me become Telephus,
You made Achilles, my sweet murderess,
Who wound me, give me healing.
