Pandora

Fable by Jean-Pierre Claris de Florian Period 18th century

When Pandora had received life,
every god hastened to adorn her with his gifts.
Venus, despite her jealousy,
unfastened her girdle and came to give it to her.
Jupiter, admiring this young marvel,
feared for humans her enchanting charms.
Venus laughed at his fear, and whispered to him:
she will wound many hearts;
but I have hidden in my girdle
the caprices to weaken
the harm that her wound will do,
and the favors to heal it.
