Smoky Diamond

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

There are diamonds with such rare gleams
That, taken by thieves or lost in the street,
They always return to the kings who own them.
So I have found my dear vanished one again.

But sometimes, broken, to various merchants
The stone is resold, unless some rare aspect
Does not defend it. In their colors, in their flashes,
Its fragments would betray the barbarous destroyer.

So I no longer fear, vaguely smoky
Diamond, but unique in your veiled splendor,
Losing you. Always toward me, your only lover,
Dear one, you will return from the hands that stole you.
