Within the Meadows I Saw a Dryad

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection First Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

Within the meadows I saw a Dryad,
Who like a flower sat down among the flowers,
And daintily fingered a garland of colors,
Unkempt in a simple verdant gown.

From that day on my reason was sick,
My heart pensive, my eyes laden with tears,
I sad and slow: such a heap of sorrows
Imprinted its glance upon my freedom.

There I felt within my eyes fly
A sweet venom, which came to flow
To the depth of my soul: and since that outrage,

Like a beautiful lily, in the month of June wounded
By a ray too hot, languishes with bowed head,
I consume myself in the greenest of my age.
