Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

To Henry Cros.

By the roadside, against a wild rosebush,
Following with her eyes the handsome cavalier
Who has just left, she rests,
A girl of sixteen, pink, in a pink dress.

And the Other stands, spirited. In her eyes
Flash the lightnings of a proud dream…
A worldly Diana with a haughty bearing,
Supple body, white brow, black hair.

While her blond friend, dreaming,
Listens to the sounds the wind brings,
Dull noises of galloping, distant sounds of horn,

Diana says to herself: “Rosette is mistaken.
When He left, all pale with emotion,
His last glance was only for me.”
