Resipiscence

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

She who appears to me, when I have closed my weary eyes,
Knits a woolen stocking. She has flat bands of hair,
She has spent the flower of her young years
In neat little parlors, in outdated colors,
And dreams of marrying a bawdy deputy.
She sings, with a thin little thread of a voice:
“The departure of Alcindor, the tears of his lover.”
Her high-buttoned bodice and her little cloak
Probably hide a frail and feverish body:
It is no wonder that I am in love with her.
