Odelette

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection OdesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

Yet though my head is whiter far
Than the opened lily’s flower,
And your face is franker still
Than a rosebud in its bower,

For all that, cruel one, you should
Not flee my white head so;
If my head above is white,
Below my tail is frank, you know.

Don’t you know, you who flee from me,
That to make a garland fine,
Or some beautiful bouquet, the rose
Is always ringed by the lily’s line?
