Mourning

Poem by Auguste Angellier Collection To the Lost FriendPeriod 19th century

The sun has fallen into the waves; a bar
Of heavy gray clouds that weigh upon the sea
Stretches along the horizon, and slowly takes hold
Of the sky where a pale and green reflection disappears.

A bitter wind rises, announcing that winter
With its hurricanes and its colds is preparing;
The hard swell has taken on a hue of iron,
Except where a wave whitens as it rises and takes fright.

On the immense surface where the cold night falls,
Straying, alone, lost, a wild duck floats;
Now, beating its wing, it lifts its stiff neck

As if to see far off, then uneasy it swims,
Or dives and reappears to rise up once more;
Its own have forgotten it; the sea loses its color.
