Marie, Who Would Turn Your Beautiful Name

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection Second Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

Marie, who would turn your beautiful name,
Would find Aimer: love me then, Marie,
Do that for me which your name begs of you,
Your love cannot be given in a better place.

If it pleases you to lead a pleasure forever,
Love me, we will take the pleasures of life,
Hanging on each other’s neck, and never any desire
To love in another place will be able to lead us.

Yet one must love something in the world:
He who does not love, that man proposes
A Scythian’s life, and his days wants to pass

Without tasting the sweetness of the sweetest sweetness.
Ah, what is sweet without Venus? Alas! at the hour
When I will not love, may I pass away!
