Laetitia rerum

Poem by Victor Hugo Themes ChildhoodPeriod 19th century

Everything is seized by a sudden shiver.
Winter flees and slips away.
The year takes off its old coat;
The earth puts on its beautiful dress.

Everything is new, everything is standing;
Adolescence is in the plains;
The beauty of the devil, everywhere,
Shines and gazes at itself in the fountains.

The tree is coquettish; among the flowers
It’s a contest of who will be the fairest;
All display their colors,
And the ugliest have zeal.

The bouquet springs from the rock;
The air kisses the light leaves;
June laughs to see dressed in their Sunday best
The little people of the ferns.

It is a celebration in truth,
A feast where the thistle comes, that rustic;
In the great palace of summer
The stars light the chandelier.

They are making hay. Soon the wheat.
The mower sleeps under the coppice;
And all the breaths are mingled
With a scent of cut grass.

Who sings there? The nightingale.
The chrysalises have departed.
The earthworm has taken its flight
And thrown its monk’s habit to the nettles;

The spider on the water makes circles;
O blue sky! the shadow is under the arbor;
The reed trembles, and the midges
Come to speak to you in your ear;

We see the fasting bee roaming,
The wasp runs, the hornet lies in wait;
To all these drinkers of perfume
Spring opens its tavern.

The bumblebee, inclined to excess,
Enters crumpling its shirt;
A carnation is a full glass,
A lily is a tablecloth set.

The fly drinks the vermilion
And the gold in the half-closed flowers,
And the drunkard is the butterfly,
And the taverns are the roses.

With joy and ecstasy one fills oneself,
Intoxication is deliverance;
On no flower does one read:
Temperance society.

Providential splendor
Everywhere shines, bursts forth and pours out,
And the only book, the sky,
Is gilded on the edge by the dawn.

Children, in your sparkling eyes
I think I see the empyrean hatch;
You laugh like the spring
And you weep like the dawn.
