Autumn Crocuses

Poem by Guillaume Apollinaire Collection AlcoolsThemes NaturePeriod 20th century

The meadow is poisonous but pretty in autumn
The cows grazing there
Slowly poison themselves
The autumn crocus the color of rings and lilac
Blooms there your eyes are like that flower
Violet like their rings and like this autumn
And my life for your eyes slowly poisons itself

The schoolchildren come with a din
Dressed in smocks and playing the harmonica
They pick the autumn crocuses that are like mothers
Daughters of their daughters and are the color of your eyelids
Which beat as flowers beat in the mad wind

The herdsman sings very softly
While slowly and lowing the cows abandon
Forever this great meadow poorly flowered by autumn
