A Beauty of Fifteen, Childlike

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection First Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

A beauty of fifteen, childlike,
A curly gold of many a ringlet wave,
A brow of rose, a youthful bloom,
A laugh that leads the soul up to the Stars;

A virtue worthy of such beauties,
A neck of snow, a breast of milk,
A heart already ripe in a young breast,
In a human Lady a divine beauty;

An eye powerful enough to turn days into nights,
A hand gentle enough to drive away sorrows,
Which holds my life shut in its fingers

With a song softly broken
Now with a laugh, now with a sigh,
By such sorcerers my reason was charmed.
