Whoever Would See How a God Overcomes Me

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection First Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

Whoever would see how a God overcomes me,
How he assails me, how he makes himself victor,
How he rekindles and re-entwines my heart,
How he receives honor from my shame,

Whoever would see a youth swift
To follow in vain the object of his misfortune,
Let him come see me: he will see my sorrow,
And the rigor of the Archer who subdues me.

He will know how much reason can do
Against his bow, when once he wills
That our heart remain his slave:

And thus he will see that I am too happy,
To have in my side the amorous sting,
Full of the venom from which I must die.
