From the Deepest Depths of My Melancholy

Poem by Charles D'Orléans Collection SongsPeriod 15th century

From the deepest depths of my melancholy
I draw the water of Hope without ceasing,
Thirst for Comfort makes me desire it,
Though often I find it dried up.

Clear I see it for a time and bright,
And then afterward troubled and worse,
From the deepest depths of my melancholy
I draw the water of Hope without ceasing.

With it I moisten my anchor of study,
When I write from it, but to anger my heart;
Fortune comes to tear my paper,
And throws everything about in her great treachery
From the deepest depths of my melancholy.
