Like as one sees the rose on the branch in the month of May

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection Second Book of LovesPeriod 16th century

Like as one sees the rose on the branch in the month of May,
In its fair youth, in its first flower,
Make the sky jealous of its vivid color,
When Dawn with its tears at daybreak waters it;

Grace in its leaves, and love repose,
Perfuming the gardens and the trees with fragrance;
But beaten by rain, or by excessive heat,
Languishing it dies, leaf by leaf disclosed.

Thus in your first and youthful newness,
When Earth and Heaven honored your beauty,
The Fates have killed you, and you rest in ashes.

For obsequies receive my tears and my weeping,
This vase full of milk, this basket full of flowers,
So that alive and dead your body may be nothing but roses.
