These Golden Tresses, This Vermilion Mouth

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection First Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

These golden tresses, this vermilion mouth,
Full of lilies, roses and carnations,
And these corals chastely vermilion,
And this cheek like the Dawn;

These hands, this neck, this brow, and this ear,
And of this breast the little green buds,
And of these eyes the twin stars,
That make souls tremble with wonder,

Made Love nest within my breast,
Who, heavy with seed, had his belly full
Of unformed eggs that in our blood he broods.

How shall I live otherwise than in languor,
When an immortal brood I find
Of Loves hatched and brooded in my heart?
