Whether Her Gold Curls Slowly Crinkle

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection First Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

Whether her gold curls slowly crinkle
Or whether they wave in two gliding streams,
Here and there wandering over her breast,
And on her neck, swimming playfully;

Or whether a knot richly adorned
With many rubies and many round pearls,
Binds the waves of her two blond braids,
My heart takes pleasure in its contentment.

What pleasure is it, nay what marvel,
When her hair, gathered above her ear,
Imitates the manner of a Venus?

When with a cap she adorns her head,
And one knows not if she is girl or boy,
So much does her beauty disguise itself in both?
