The Starry Head – A Bird Sings

Poem by Guillaume Apollinaire Collection CalligrammesThemes WarPeriod 20th century

A bird sings I know not where
It is I believe your soul keeping watch
Among all the penny soldiers
And the bird charms my ear

Listen it sings tenderly
I do not know on which branch
And everywhere it goes charming me
Night and day week and Sunday

But what to say of this bird
What to say of the metamorphoses
Of the soul into song in the little tree
Of the heart into sky of the sky into roses

The bird of soldiers is love
And my love is a girl
The rose is less perfect and for
Me alone the blue bird strains its voice

Blue bird like the blue heart
Of my love with the celestial heart
Your song so sweet repeat it
To the deadly machine gun

Which each at the horizon and then
Are they the stars that are sown
Thus go the days and the nights
Blue love like the heart itself
