The Rhine

Poem by Alfred De Musset Collection ArrayThemes Nature, PlacesPeriod 19th century

O Rhine, do you know why senseless lovers,
Abandoning their souls to tender reveries,
Through your verdant woods, through your broad meadows
Go forever driven by their folly?

Do you know why never the mournful mockeries,
The examples of yesterday, nor those of times past,
From your adored mountains, from your cherished banks,
Have made them descend and have never driven them away?

It is that, in all times, those whom man separates
And whom God reunites will go seeking the woods,
And will listen to the voices of vast torrents.

Free man will come, far from a barbarous world,
On the rocks and the mountains, as at the foot of an altar,
To protest against man while looking at the sky.
