The Muse

Poem by Charles-Nérée Beauchemin Collection ArrayPeriod 19th century

Cornflower with amethyst glances,
Cornflower with sky-blue eyes, tell us
What makes you so sad?
– I have seen her eyes, and I am jealous of them.

And you, simple pink eglantine,
Country maid with carmine lips,
Why do you seem so sullen?
– I am jealous of her complexion.

You, lovely lily, what say you? – Why have I not
The fine velvet, the whiteness,
The freshness of dawn and of snow
Of her diaphanous fairness!

I understand your jealousy,
O flowers, for yesterday, in this place,
In her fancy gown
The Muse passed beneath your eyes.
