The Invitation to the Voyage

Poem by Charles Baudelaire Collection The Flowers of EvilThemes DreamsPeriod 19th century

My child, my sister,
Think of the sweetness
Of going there to live together!
To love at leisure,
To love and to die
In the land that resembles you!
The watery suns
Of those misty skies
For my spirit have the charms
So mysterious
Of your treacherous eyes,
Shining through their tears.

There, all is order and beauty,
Luxury, calm, and pleasure.

Shining furniture,
Polished by the years,
Would adorn our room;
The rarest flowers
Mingling their scents
With the vague fragrances of amber,
The rich ceilings,
The deep mirrors,
The oriental splendor,
All there would speak
To the soul in secret
Its gentle native tongue.
There, all is order and beauty,
Luxury, calm, and pleasure.

See on these canals
Sleeping those vessels
Whose mood is vagabond;
It is to satisfy
Your slightest desire
That they come from the ends of the earth.
– The setting suns
Clothe the fields,
The canals, the entire city,
In hyacinth and gold;
The world falls asleep
In a warm light.

There, all is order and beauty,
Luxury, calm, and pleasure.
