The Four Seasons – Winter

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

It is winter. Coal from the earth
Blazes in my lonely room.

Snow falls on the rooftops.
White! Oh, her beautiful breasts, white and cold!

The same trail on the chimneys
As in her scattered tresses.

At the ball, each one politely tosses
The ferocious words of forgetting,

The water that sang has frozen,
Love, what boredom replaces you!
