Shell of Moon Color – Simultaneities

Poem by Guillaume Apollinaire Collection CalligrammesThemes WarPeriod 20th century

The cannons thunder in the night
It sounds like stormy waves
Hearts where a great boredom shows
Boredom that always repeats itself

He watches coming over there
The prisoners The hour is so sweet
In this great muffled noise very low
Very low that grows without a jolt

He holds his helmet in his hands
To salute the remembrance
Of lilies roses jasmines
Blooming in the gardens of France

And under the masked hood
He thinks of hair so dark
But who then waits for him on the quay
O vast sea with mauve shadows

Beautiful nuts of the living walnut tree
Great madness vainly beats you down
Brunette listen to the chirping
Of the titmouse on your shoulder

Our love is a glimmer
That a projector of the heart directs
Toward the equal ardor of the heart
That rises on the high Lighthouse

O flower-lighthouse my memories
The black hair of Madeleine
The atrocious glares of the shots
Add their sudden clarity
To your beautiful eyes o Madeleine
