Rhénane Night

Poem by Guillaume Apollinaire Collection AlcoolsThemes Fear, LifePeriod 20th century

My glass is full of a wine that trembles like a flame
Listen to the slow song of a boatman
Who tells of having seen beneath the moon seven women
Wringing their long green hair down to their feet

Stand up sing louder dancing in a round
So that I no longer hear the boatman’s song
And bring close to me all the blond girls
With motionless gaze and coiled braids

The Rhine the Rhine is drunk where the vineyards gaze at themselves
All the gold of the nights falls trembling to be reflected there
The voice still sings till it dies in a rattle
Those fairies with green hair who bewitch the summer

My glass has shattered like a burst of laughter
