Put Me on the Shore Where the Sun Rises

Poem by Jean-Antoine De Baïf Collection Loves of MélinePeriod 16th century

Put me on the shore where the sun rises,
Or near the wave where its flame goes out,
Put me in places its ray does not reach,
Or on the sand where its torch is too heavy.

Put me in joy or in sorrow long or brief,
In free liberty, or in forced servitude,
Put me at large, or confined in prison,
In safety or in doubt, in war or in truce.

Put me at the foot or else on the summits
Of the highest mountains, O Meline, and put me
In sad shadow, or in gay light,

Put me in the sky, put me beneath the earth,
I shall be the same, and my final faith
Shall be without end equal to my first.
