O Sweet Speech, Whose Honeyed Bait

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection First Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

O sweet speech, whose honeyed bait
Still feeds the hunger of my memory,
O forehead, of Love the Trophy and the glory,
O sugared smiles, O savory kisses;

O golden hair, O fertile slopes
Of lilies, of carnations, of porphyry and ivory,
O twin fires of which heaven made me drink
O such long draughts the amorous venom;

O vermilions, O enclosed little pearls,
O diamonds, O crimson lilies of roses,
O song that can move the hardest hearts,

And whose accent dwells in souls.
And, alas, beauties, will the hour ever return
When I may hold you again in my arms?
