Now Fear and Now Hope

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection First Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

Now fear and now hope
On all sides encamp in my heart:
Neither one nor the other in the fight is victor,
Equal in strength and perseverance.

Now doubtful, now full of assurance,
Between hope and the cold of fear,
Happily self-deceiving,
To my captive heart I promise deliverance.

Will I not see before dying the time
When I shall reap the flower of her spring,
Under which my life remains in the shade?

Will I not see myself in her arms entwined,
Exhausted by love, all breathless and weary,
Die a beautiful death in her arms?
