Never

Poem by Alfred De Musset Collection New PoemsPeriod 19th century

Never, you said, while around us
resounded Schubert’s plaintive music;
Never, you said, while, in spite of you,
shone from your large eyes the melancholy blue.

Never, you repeated, pale and with an air so sweet
that one might have thought one saw an ancient medal smile.
But a proud and modest instinct of secret treasures
covered you with blushes, like a jealous veil.

What a word you utter, marquise, and what a pity!
Alas! I saw neither that charming face,
nor that divine smile, when speaking to you of love.

Your blue eyes are less sweet than your soul is beautiful.
Even in gazing at them, I regretted only it,
and to see in its flower such a heart close.
