My God, How I Love to Kiss Those Beautiful Eyes

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection First Book of LovesThemes LovePeriod 16th century

My God, how I love to kiss those beautiful eyes
Of my mistress, and to twist in my mouth
The fine gold of her hair that skirmishes
So gaily above two little heavens!

It is, I think, the best of all her best,
That beautiful eye, which touches me to the heart,
Whose fair knot would make the heart of a fiercer Scythian
Courteous and gracious.

Her lovely golden hair, and her eyebrows too,
With their beauties make the Dawn blush,
When in the morning she embellishes the day.

Within her eye a virtue dwells,
Which goes swearing by the arrows of Love
To heal me; but I do not trust in it.
