Love Verses

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

As in the courtyard of a madhouse
The anxious world hurries and frets
Around my eyes, pursuing to its lair
The dream I have when I think of you.

But no longer able to bear it, still, I isolate myself
In my memories. I close my eyes;
I see you passing in the distant blues,
And I hear the sound of your voice.

*

As for me, I am bored in these mocking times.
I know that the earth obsesses you too.
Will you attempt (two together help each other)
An escape toward better skies?
