In the Woods

Poem by Gérard De Nerval Period 19th century

In spring the bird is born and sings:
Have you not heard its voice?…
It is pure, simple and touching,
The voice of the bird – in the woods!

In summer, the bird seeks its mate;
It loves – and loves but once!
How sweet, peaceful and faithful,
The nest of the bird – in the woods!

Then when misty autumn comes,
it falls silent… before the cold.
Alas! how happy it must be,
The death of the bird – in the woods!
