I Came Back Alone

Poem by Auguste Angellier Collection To the Lost FriendThemes NaturePeriod 19th century

I came back alone to see our valley again;
It is deserted, it is silent, it is winter.
In its stripped woods how desolate it is!
The crest of the hills is lost in the mist;

The banks have barely a little green grass;
The little river with its lively current is frozen;
The waterfall is a block of piled-up ice
Under its old wooden bridge, covered with frost;

The birds are huddled close; only a kingfisher,
Having come near the mill to seek running water,
Flies away; crows cross the cold sky;

No sound but the distant gun of a hunter;
Already evening grips with grievous sadness
The bare landscape that seems narrower.
