View of the Courtyard

Poem by Charles Cros Collection The Sandalwood CasketPeriod 19th century

The kitchen is very clean and the pot-au-feu boils
On the stove. The maid, waiting for her soldier lad,
Grumbling, peels vegetables and salad,
Her fingers red and greasy, with black at the tips,
Find earthworms among the green leaves.
They beat the bolsters at the open windows.
But here comes the fellow. After a big hello,
They give him the flower of the broth, their love
Shelters in the steam of the pot, warm twilight…
And I don’t find that so ridiculous.
