One Day, When Winter’s Wearisome Cold

Poem by Jean-Antoine De Baïf Collection Loves of MélinePeriod 16th century

One day, when winter’s wearisome cold
Grew mild, making way for gracious spring,
When all laughs in the fields, and the joyful meadows
Paint with lovely flowers their laughing green;

Near the winding Clain, beneath a dark rock,
A sweet sleep closed my eyes with a sweet bond.
Lo, in my slumber a brightness from the heavens
Came to kindle the shadow with a pure light.

Lo, coming from the heavens, under the escort of Love,
Nine nymphs who might be said to be all twins;
In a circle around me they made a turn.

When one, holding out to me a green chaplet of myrtle,
Said: Sing of love other new songs,
And you will be able to climb to our sacred peak.
