So Many Times Making Up, So Many Times Quarreling

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection Sonnets for HélèneThemes LovePeriod 16th century

So many times making up, so many times quarreling,
So many times breaking apart and then rejoining,
Now blaming Love and now praising him,
So many times fleeing each other, so many times seeking,

So many times showing ourselves, so many times hiding,
Now submitting to the yoke, now shaking it off,
Acknowledging one’s promise and disowning it,
Are signs that Love comes near to touch us.

Amorous inconstancy is a mark of affection.
If then all at once to feel hatred and pity,
To swear, to forswear, oaths made and unmade,

To hope one’s hope, comfort without comfort
Are true signs of love, we love each other very strongly,
For we always have either war, or peace.
