I Plant in Your Favor This Tree of Cybèle

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection Sonnets for HélèneThemes LovePeriod 16th century

I plant in your favor this tree of Cybèle,
This pine, where your honors will be read every day:
I have engraved on the trunk our names and our loves,
Which will grow in rivalry with the new bark.

Fauns who inhabit my paternal land,
Who lead along the Loir your dances and your turns,
Favor the plant and give it aid,
May Summer not burn it, nor Winter freeze it.

Shepherd, who will lead your flock to this place,
Piping an Eclogue on your oaten pipe,
Attach each year to this tree a tablet,

That testifies to passersby my loves and my pain;
Then watering it with milk and the blood of a lamb,
Say: “This pine is sacred, it is the plant of Hélène.”
