Ah! What Hatred and Envy I Bear

Poem by Pierre De Ronsard Collection Second Book of LovesThemes HealthPeriod 16th century

Ah! What hatred and envy I bear
Toward the doctor who comes night and morning
With no purpose, groping the teat,
The breast, the belly, and the flanks of my beloved!

Alas! He is not so careful of his life
As she thinks; he is wicked and cunning:
A hundred times a day he comes to see her, only
To see her breast, which invites him to love.

You who have care of her fever,
I beg you to drive far away from me
This doctor, enamored of my beloved,

Who pretends to come to treat her:
Would to God, to reward him for it,
That he had my illness, and that she were cured!
