In Winter, Fire, Fire!

Poem by Charles D'Orléans Collection RondeauxPeriod 15th century

In winter, fire, fire!
And in summer, drink, drink!
That’s what one remembers
When one arrives anywhere.

It’s neither a joke nor a game
For anyone who’ll take my advice:
In winter, fire, fire!
And in summer, drink, drink!

Hot morsels made by a good cook
Are needed in cold weather, indeed, indeed;
In heat, a cold apple or pear—
That is God’s ordinance:
In winter, fire, fire!

1. Queu: Cook.
