Will I Ever See the End

Poem by Charles D'Orléans Collection RondeauxPeriod 15th century

Will I ever see the end,
Of your works, Melancholy?
When in the evening from you I free myself
You tie me back in the morning.

I would rather have another neighbor
Than you who so fiercely war on me;
Will I ever see the end,
Of your works, Melancholy?

Toward me you come like a thief
And steal from me glad Pleasure;
Am I destined in my life
To be always in such strife (1)?
Will I ever see the end?

1. Hutin: Quarrel.
