Verses Written on a Keepsake, Poem by Chateaubriand

Poem by François-René De Chateaubriand Collection Miscellaneous PoemsPeriod 19th century

You who will live forever, how can you believe
That one offers you flowers so quick to die?
“Present, you will say, these daughters of the Zephyr
To beauty, but not to glory.”
Know better the worth of the gifts of friendship.
Disdain these new flowers less:
In painting them upon your writings,
I have found the secret of making them immortal
