To Ulric G

Poem by Alfred De Musset Collection Early PoemsPeriod 19th century

Ulric, no eye of the seas has measured the abyss,
Neither the diving herons, nor the old sailors.
The sun comes to shatter its rays on their summit,
Like a defeated soldier breaking his javelins.

Thus, no eye, Ulric, has penetrated the waves
Of your boundless sorrows, angel fallen from heaven.
You carry in your head and in your heart two worlds,
When in the evening, near me, you walk sad and bent.

But let me at least look into your soul,
As a fearful child leans over the waters;
You so full, brow paled beneath a woman’s kisses,
I so young, envying your wound and your woes.
