This Gentle Winter That Matches Its Days

Poem by Théodore Agrippa D'Aubigné Period 16th century

This gentle winter that matches its days
To a springtime, so lovely is it,
Though it be fair, it is not pleasing to me,
I fear its tail, and its outcome always.

I have well learned that warm loves,
Which at first serve you a table
Full of sugar and delectable dishes,
Keep for the fruit their bitterness and their tricks.

I already see the trees that bud
In a thousand knots, and its beauties astonish me,
In one night this spring is frozen,

Thus love that advances too serenely,
Laughs at us, opens a beautiful appearance to us,
Is born too soon, too soon erased.
